On brunch assignment for the Columbus Dispatch in April, we landed at Third & Hollywood. It was our first time trying the restaurant ever, and we were pretty impressed by the whole experience. You can read my thoughts on it here.

Of course, we captured moments on our own, too, and I’m here to share them.

Space-wise the restaurant balances an open design with dark wood, brick, and stone to create a fairly private feel. The noise level is still pretty high, especially with a live jazz band at Sunday brunch, but it felt comfortable enough for our table.

There’s a respectable beer list (I had Land-Grant’s Stiff Arm IPA) and a substantial cocktail list. The Bloody Mary is only offered with brunch, but the rest of the cocktails are available all week. That Bloody Mary, though… Mrs. Bfast w/Nick is a fan of them, and this one has stood out like none other in recent memory. Substantial body without being heavy, good balance of spices, appropriate garnishes without being overdone.

On the recommendation of many friends (and our server), we ordered the cheesy biscuits and house-made pimento spread. Oh, they were right. Soft, chewy biscuits. Rich, tangy spread. We gobbled it up.

Third & Hollywood – like many brunch places these days – scores a win with their kid’s menu. It features four items – and they’re all plated at the same standards as the adults’ meals. For instance, the grilled cheese with a side fruit.

I zeroed in on the steak and eggs (because of a protein deficiency? I don’t know). I’ve had a lot of great meals in recent months, but this one really stood out. Eggs done just right, steak perfectly cooked, excellent roasted asparagus, fingerling potatoes soft and well seasoned without being mushy. My only complaint was the amount of steak included, but I understand that’s the most expensive piece of the dish.

Another easy win was the Iron Skillet Chorizo and Eggs. The skillet is loaded with a bed of black beans, veggies, a little cheese, plus the chorizo and over easy eggs. All in all, a very flavorful dish. Nice color to it, too.

The open kitchen at Third & Hollywood makes a nice impact, as does the live jazz on Sundays. They have a small patio on the side, too.

Brunch at Third & Hollywood leans toward the fancy side, but it’s casual enough to be comfortable on an impromptu date or a family outing.
