Writing about Bottoms Up Coffee Co-op this week reminded me of the growing number of socially-conscious restaurants, the cafes and coffee shops and eateries trying to do some good in the world. Bottoms Up uses their profits to support mothers and reduce infant mortality in the city. I’m glad to see the number of businesses like them growing. So let’s give them a shout-out!
1. Double Comfort – Double Comfort’s tagline is “Buy a meal, give a meal.” Owner Mary Lyski started the Memphis-style fried chicken restaurant as a revenue stream to support different food banks and social service organizations. Every time you buy a meal at Double Comfort, they donate a meal to those in need.
2. Roosevelt Coffeehouse – Similarly, Roosevelt Coffeehouse uses their profits to combat human trafficking, buy clean drinking water, and eliminate poverty. Who knew a cup of coffee could do so much?
3. Hot Chicken Takeover – HCT’s hiring practices have made as much of a mark as their spicy Nashville-style fried chicken. They employ many people who have been incarcerated or who are trying to build a positive work history.
4. BONUS: Commonhouse Ales – Have some beer with your brunch! Commonhouse is the state’s first B-Corp brewery; they donate $1 from every six-pack sale of their Six.One For Good Ale to Commonhouse Shares, a fund that supports local organizations. They just announced their first partner (and one that’s near and dear to my heart): Wild Goose Creative! Pick up a Commonhouse six-pack at over 75 stores around town.
